While in college, she took part in the 1991 FIFA Women's World Cup. Hamm finished college with a 94-and-1 record and was a two-time ACC Female Athlete of the Year.

Hamm made history, becoming the youngest woman selected to the national soccer team at the age of 15. She scored the game-winning goal in her first World Cup game and went on to win the entire tournament, defeating Norway, 2-1. Four years later, she led the team to a semifinal finish at the World Cup, and a year later, took gold in the 1996 Summer Olympics. In 1999, Hamm and the women's national team won their second World Cup.
