She is the only child and was raised in Mt Lebanon, Pennsylvania, by her mother.
Her family owned the Erie brewing company in which her grandfather, John Martin Magenau Jr, served as president and CEO until its closure in 1978. Gillian graduated from Lebanon high school in 2000 and later went to attend Juilliard school in New York City, where she graduated in 2004 with a Bachelor in Fine Arts. While growing up, Gillian took acting classes on weekends at Pittsburgh playhouse and performed with Pittsburgh public theatre.
